BFA Capstone Project: buzzed
Student Work, 2018
CHALLENGE: Create a sustainable cannabis brand that centers around honey bee conservation.
SOLUTION: A space that is designed to house and protect honey bees through the act of pollinating cannabis. The cannabis products produced by this space are entirely sustainable, with most materials being sourced from within this honey bee sanctuary.
DETAILS: I created an info graphic to visualize a theoretical space where honey bees and cannabis coexist. The packaging itself is not only sourced from industrial hemp, but also makes use of byproducts produced by bees in order to comply with strict regulations imposed on cannabis packaging. This info graphic and the natural hemp texture inform the visual style of the brand.
This info graphic is the centerpiece of the brand. It maps out the conceptual space designed to house and protect honeybees.
The visual representation of the interaction between honey bees and the space is strongly inspired by the New York subway maps designed by Masimo Vignelli.
Packaging concept for concentrates and extracts. The silhouette of a bee is cut from each package, so the extract is visible.
Hang tags carry wildflower seeds that can be dispersed, resulting in pollination pathways that allow honeybees to travel longer distances from their hives within urban environments.
Packaging concept for loose cannabis flower. Sealed with industrial hemp cloth and hemp twine, both sourced from within the space.
Packaging concept for infused cookies. Sealed with hemp derived cellophane.
Packaging concepts for cannabis pre-rolls. A one gram pre-roll tube, and a six pack of single gram pre-rolls separated with an interior divider that helps the package hold its shape.
The hexagon is an unusual shape for packaging that ties to honeycombs. It was a challenge to apply this shape to each package. Giving each package distinct panels not only made the distribution of information easier, but also made the colored lines running through each package more angular.
